Why Lessons with Justin?
Because I know the journey you are on.
Breakthroughs don't happen by chance. They are often the result of knowledge, preparation, and practice.
My journey toward singing was full of joy! It is that joy that carried me to study it, perform it, and pass on what I know to my students.
But for a time, my singing was very difficult. I knew I wanted to sing better, but there were challenging technical hurdles
I spent years overcoming. Having rebuilt my singing technique from the ground up, I know many of the challenges
that singers face both early on and at more advanced stages of training. After struggling so long to sing confidently and freely,
I have developed a comprehensive approach to vocal training, underpinned great empathy for singers in search of a way forward.
Join me in the studio, and we will find your breakthrough together!

Vocal Technique
Singers always have questions about singing technique. Here are some of the many we address in lessons:
BreathingHow does the breath cycle affect my singing?
How can we maximize efficient use of our breath? What does a "good singer's breath" feel like? How do I know I am singing "on the breath?" Is there more than one strategy for effective breathing? What exercises can you give me to train my breathing? |
Posture and AlignmentWhat's the difference between Posture and Alignment?
How does posture affect my singing? How can I build greater awareness of what my body is capable of? How do I sit/ stand with better alignment? How can a greater mind-body connection improve my technique and creativity? |
Resonance and ArticulationWhat is resonance?
How can I use different resonance strategies to be a more versatile vocalist? Will my voice ever feel more consistent? Can resonance solutions help me sing higher? Longer? What are some exercises for gaining control of my articulators (lips, teeth, jaw, soft palate, tongue)? How can I find freedom and clarity while singing? |
Testimonials
Justin's students have successfully landed coveted college admissions, leading roles in academic and community musical theater productions, prestigious chorus acceptances, church gigs, and many other singing engagements. Here's what they're saying about lessons.
Eileen Harvard University, 2024"Thank you for everything you’ve done for me these past years! I am going to be singing with the Radcliffe Choral Society in college and am super excited! It meant a lot to me how you managed to take my singing from someone who didn’t know how to sing at all and just wanted to be in a middle school show to someone looking to sing their whole life, in college and beyond. Singing always makes me happy and I’m so grateful for everything you’ve done."
Ben Boston Conservatory, 2023"Your dedication and insight have helped show me what I am capable of in my singing and on stage. It's thanks to you that I am able to attend my dream school this Fall."

Paul Northwestern, 2022“I started working with Justin after my voice changed in middle school. He taught me the basics of singing all the way through helping me get through my college auditions! His encouraging attitude kept me excited as he taught me about the fundamentals of vocal music as well as teaching me about my body and instrument. I’m glad to have worked with Justin and credit his encouragement to helping me realize how much I love singing and to pursue a degree in voice and opera performance at the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University."

Style and ArtistryMusical Styles
Students today come to lessons with a broad musical background, enjoying many different musical styles. I consider myself to be stylistically agnostic - there is not one style of singing that is inherently better than another. Each style of music, and in many cases, each composer or songwriter, needs a particular approach or skill set. As an independent teacher, I have the luxury of learning and teaching a wide array of styles. Through continuing education, and expanding my own singing vocabulary, I've broadened my approach to a wider variety of singing via national conferences, workshops, and genre-specific reading. Artistry in Song For a long time, singers and teachers have acknowledged the connection between the mind and body. Only recently have advances in our understanding of the human mind been able to more clearly tell us why and how the two are inextricably linked. Music making and singing is one of those processes that involves a rich amount of the human experience - our senses, our memories, emotions, and instincts. We understand this on a visceral level when we hear a choir sing or watch our favorite artist perform. Now, we have a clearer understanding of how those processes influence one another, and can begin to train them together, creating more compelling art while progressing faster! |
